[FOSDEM] CFP Open Research devroom

https://lists.fosdem.org/pipermail/fosdem/2024q4/003603.html

The call for papers for the Open Research Devroom is open. Please check the requirements and see if anyone of you would like to do a presentation on a topic. Of course, we can discuss at PHAIDRAcon the coming week.

Would this be ok as proposal?

Title

The remaking of PHAIDRA

Abstract

PHAIDRA, the Fedora-based digital preservation repository developed since more than 15 years at the University of Vienna and used by more than 20 institutions has recently reached important technological milestones as well as became easier to setup than ever before. Given the number of open source repository offerings, PHAIDRA is choosing to double down on usability for Humanities, Arts, Cultural Heritage and, as a community, to explore what OA/Open Academia means for these areas…

Description

We’d like to

  • present our current architecture, which is based on docker (we’re working on k8s version too)
  • give an overview of the tech stack and frontend and backend features
  • show a few usage examples (OA, OER, theses, media libraries, research data, digital archives…)
  • describe the component-based implementation of our RDF metadata scheme
  • share our experience with migration from Fedora 3 to Fedora 6 (backend repository)

Thanks Rasta - this looks really good.

My only comments are:

“…completely open to the community:”
Followed by a repo that is a mirror - albeit with a friendly note welcoming contributions.

  • Just seems strange - wonder if we can just make the link look better.

  • Might be good to include “renewed focus” in the changes:
Given the number of open source repository offerings, PHAIDRA is choosing to double down on usability for Humanities, Arts, Cultural Heritage and, as a community, to explore what OA/Open Academia means for these areas…

Just some ideas - its good as is.

Great idea, thanks! Check out the edited version.

Can you give me a PHAIDRA pitch for the githubs about page? (we can remove the mention of the mirror, etc, it’s not important)

Hi Rasta,

With Rory’s comments included, we should be good to go. As today is the deadline, I would submit it

~ben.

Yes yes, I submitted it on Friday already. Thanks!

That awesome… Now fingers crossed

Hey Rasta - Sorry, I nearly forgot about the Git Hub page that I promised…

We have trained up a really simple GPT on all of the best writing we have produced about PHAIDRA. Thought I would ask it to produce a Git Hub intro, this is what it came up with (let me know what you think):

PHAIDRA: Permanent Hosting, Archiving, and Indexing of Digital Resources and Assets

PHAIDRA is an open-source platform designed to simplify the management, preservation, and reuse of research data and digital assets across academia, cultural heritage institutions, and research organizations. Built on the robust Fedora repository, PHAIDRA extends its capabilities with an integrated stack of open-source tools, APIs, and frameworks, delivering a comprehensive solution for modern research data management.

Our mission is to ensure that research data and digital assets are not just stored but actively reused, shared, and brought to life in new ways. PHAIDRA aligns with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), making it easier for institutions and researchers to comply with data management standards, attract funding, and foster open science and open academia.

Key Features:

  • User-Friendly Interface: Simplifies data management for non-technical users with intuitive tools for uploading, organizing, and searching digital assets.
  • Metadata Automation: Automates best practices for metadata creation to enhance discoverability and reuse.
  • FAIR Data Compliance: Ensures data is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, supporting global standards.
  • Open Source and Customizable: Built with flexibility in mind, PHAIDRA provides APIs, Vue.js components, and a robust backend for tailored solutions.
  • Active Community: Join a collaborative network of over 20 institutions worldwide sharing innovations, insights, and best practices.

Who is PHAIDRA for?

From universities to libraries, museums, and research organizations, PHAIDRA supports a wide range of institutions in managing and preserving digital assets. Whether it’s research datasets, digitized artifacts, or multimedia collections, PHAIDRA enables organizations to unlock the full value of their resources.

No luck with FOSDEM either! The proposal was refused.

As for the github: That’s nice! I can use that as the start of the README.

But the about section needs just a pitch, this would not fit here:

Oh no, how sad! :frowning: well, next time…

Hey Rasta! Sad it is, but will you and your colleague come to FOSDEM anyway?

We can ask Raman if @Matthias can go anyway. I will actually be in Bruxelles that weekend on a private trip with my son, but I’m not sure if I’ll attend the conference. Is anybody else around?

I plan to be around on the saturday
